The secret of how to make a dotted line in Photoshop

In a previous post we looked at how to make a straight line in Photoshop but in this post we are going to make a dotted line. The process is a little different. I remember not having any clue how to make dotted lines until I watched a YouTube video. I played with the stroke, gap and dash settings with no success. Then when I saw the YouTube video which suggested creating a brush with spacing, it all clicked in to place.

To make the dotted line we need to create a brush. Creating brushes in Photoshop is very easy. Once you know how to do it, you will unlock the true power of drawing and painting in Photoshop. I think the best way to think about it is not to focus on creating a dotted line. I know that sounds a little odd but really we are creating a brush which just happens to make dotted lines. Hopefully you can see the difference there. If not then just know that creating a brush with spacing between each brush stroke will create a dotted line.

The cool advantage of doing things this way is that you can also make use of the stroke path feature in Photoshop. This will allow you to create dotted lines along complex paths. I demonstrate this in the video above with a very simple path but using the pen tool, you can be more creative.

I hope you found this post useful.
