Digital Painting – Pearl

Digital Painting – Pearl

On of my favorite paintings was painted by Johannes Vermeer in 1665. It is the Girl with a Pearl Earring and is regarded as a true masterpiece and often described as the “Dutch Mona Lisa”. Because I liked this painting so much, I decided to create my own version in some kind of colorful, messy tribute. This is how it turned out.

I created the painting using the following equipment:

  • Artrage – Digital painting program for Windows, Mac and tablet. I used the Windows desktop version of the software for this piece
  • Wacom Intuos 4 Graphics Tablet – A graphics tablet is a “must have” item for desktop based digital art and Wacom has always been my weapon of choice
  • Adobe Photoshop – Sizing the reference image followed by some minor adjustments to lighting with Photoshop.

Mixed feelings over this one because I do like it however you cannot beat the original. I am glad that I took the time to create this painting. I spent a lot of time looking at and appreciating the original. (Note how I never changed the pearl – That felt like a step too far changing that part)
