In this short video tutorial you can see how to create a lightning brush in Photoshop.
Creating custom brushes in Photoshop is an extremely powerful tool with almost endless limitations. It is an often underused feature but once you get the hang of it then you will wonder how you manged without it. I say this from experience as I often avoided creating brushes as I did not fully understand them.
The concept is relatively straight forward in the sense that as long as you have black marks on a white background, you can create a custom brush of any shape whatsoever. You can do this from sampling photographs, freehand drawing or creating shapes. As long as you have black marks on a white background you can create the brush.
In this tutorial I used the difference clouds filter followed by inversions in order to create the lightning bolt shape. Very easy to do and check out the video to see how it is done. You can take this concept on to the next level and create more advanced custom lightning brushes.
